The Italian way of democracy at school by Mariella Del Gaudio headteacher 4° Circolo Didattico "Carolina Senatore" Scafati - Italy
The democratic opening of the school in Italy took place with the
Delegated Decrees n 416,417, 418, 419, and 420 of 1974. The delegated decrees of 1974 constitute the legislative response to the
student protests of 1968 and to the new attitudes of the democratic and
progressive intellectuals who, assuming the conviction that innovative ferments
find correspondence in social changes, economic and cultural, they feel that it
is no longer possible to postpone the implementation of a different school,
orientation and promotional instead of the selective one disputed loudly by the
students in all the squares and schools of Italy. The school becomes a structure no
longer verticistical but horizontal in which the organization and the
operation, on the administrative level and on the didactic and educational
level, are entrusted to bodies to collegial democratic character that, in the
respect of the competences of each, ensure the participation of the entire
school community in school life.
